International Volunteer Day 2011

Launch of the UNV Report

December 5th was International Volunteer Day and this year’s celebrations coincided with the launch of the UNV report The State of the World’s Volunteerism. The report was launched in the General Assembly in New York while national launches took place all over the world. The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Andrew Montague officially launched the report on behalf of Comhlámh in the Mansion House in Dublin.

Comhlámh Director Deirdre Murray, the UNV Chief of Peace Kevin Gilroy and returned volunteer Noel Brennan also spoke at the event providing an array of valuable perspectives on overseas volunteering. Kevin Gilroy also sat down with our Code of Good Practice Project Officer, Shannette Budhai,  during the event to give us his thoughts on how different forms of  volunteering and good practice standards in volunteering can contribute to the well being and devlopment of societies.
