Volunteering Overseas: Where do I start? - Autumn 2013

A one-day participatory workshop for people interested in volunteering overseas in a developing country.

Who should attend?

This course is open to anyone considering volunteering or working overseas for global development (both short-term and long-term).

What is covered?

This participatory one-day workshop covers the following topics:

  • An introduction to development
  • The role of the volunteer/development worker
  • Motivations and expectations for volunteering
  • Types of volunteering opportunities available
  • Possibilities for getting involved in global development from Ireland

What does the course achieve?

  • A space for people who are considering volunteering overseas to meet, explore & discuss the issues informally
  • An introduction to development issues
  • An opportunity to consider critical perspectives on volunteering and to reflect on good practice in overseas volunteering
  • An opportunity to meet with recently returned volunteers and development workers

How much does it cost?

€15.00 Comhlámh member/student or unwaged

What Next Course - 01st - 03rd Mar (Residential), 13th Apr and the 08th Jun 2013

‘What  Next’ is a course for returnees who have lived and worked overseas in the capacity of learner, volunteer or development worker, and who are interested to continue engagement in development education from Ireland.

The 4-day course will engage participants in a critical process to explore development issues and skills to raise awareness and take action locally. An outcome of the course is that participants will have the opportunity to develop and deliver an Action Project either individually or as a group around a particular issue or idea.

How much?

The course will cost €60 per person, which covers all training materials, accommodation costs, meals and refreshments.

When and Where?

  • Residential* on the weekend of the 01st of March 2013
  • Saturday 13th Apr 2013 - Sophia Centre, Cork Street, Dublin 8
  • Saturday 08th Jun 2013 - The Lantern Centre, 17 Synge St, Dublin 8

*The residential will take place in the Cloughjordan Ecovillage, Tipperary (Ireland’s first ecovillage development). Transport to the venue is accessible and very reasonable, and we would also encourage car sharing.

What is provided?

  • Residential accommodation
  • All meals and refreshments
  • 4-days of training
  • Support, funding and mentoring to develop Action Projects

Ethical Volunteering: Skills in Intercultural Understanding and Development - 08th June 2013

This pre-departure course is open to anyone about to volunteer or work overseas for global development (both short-term and long-term).

What is covered? 

  • Better prepared volunteers
  • Understanding of how to be responsible and responsive volunteers
  • Awareness of how to manage expectations
  • Reflection on how to contribute to social change generally and to the work of the sending agency more specifically.

How Much Does it Cost?

€15 Comhlámh member/student or unwaged
€25 non-member (waged)

8th June 2013, 10.00 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Irish Aid
Volunteering and Information Centre, 27-31 Upper O’Connell Street, Dublin 1
