Initial Preparation for Working in the South
Duration: 3.5 days
Course Aim and Objectives: The aim of the course is to assist development personnel prepare for their role abroad in a significantly different cultural setting. The course gives participants the space to reflect on their personal preparation as well as increasing their understanding of development issues and developing their communication skills. At the end of the course participants will have:
- An awareness of personal welfare and health issues including HIV/AIDS
- A deeper understanding of the obstacles to partnership, specifically power relations, and racism
- Explored why gender needs to be addressed in development
- Received an introduction to project planning
- Clarified further their personal and professional motives and objectives
- Increased their commitment to their communications role overseas
Who Should Attend: Development personnel of Irish and international NGOs and Irish lay/missionary organisations going into the field.
Prerequisites: This course is open to all participants.
