Comhlámh is a dynamic, membership organisation committed to critical engagement on worldwide development. Through awareness raising, research, education and training we empower individuals to take effective action for addressing global injustice.

Our mission is to challenge our society on the root causes of global poverty and inequality and empower people to demand equity in global relations. Ours is the belief that people acting in solidarity can change the structures of global injustice and poverty. As the Irish Association of Development Workers we protect the interests of people working in development and for human rights. Our work is informed by their experiences.

General Information on Post:
The Volunteering Options & Development Worker’s (VODW) Programme aims to develop and promote good practice standards in volunteering to ensure that it has a positive impact for all stakeholders and contributes to international development, global education and awareness raising. The VODW Programme has played a leading role in the development of the Irish international volunteering sector.

In 2010, the VODW Programme will focus on four main areas:

- Setting & Promoting Good Practice Standards in Volunteering – Supporting organisations in implementing Comhlámh’s Code of Good Practice for Volunteer Sending Organisations.
- Responsible, Responsive Volunteering – providing volunteers with comprehensive information and training in line with volunteering good practice. Resources and initiatives include a website www.volunteeringoptions.org with comprehensive information on international volunteering; a Volunteer Charter that provides a model of responsible, responsive volunteering for volunteers; a series of training and advice workshops to prepare people before they go overseas.
- Continuous Engagement – Supporting volunteers and development workers in the Coming Home and Moving Forward process to facilitate ongoing engagement with development issues. Areas of work include Coming Home & Moving Forward sessions, group de-briefing, counselling, career guidance, membership events.
- International Exchange and Networking re Good Practice in Volunteering – linking with European and International networks to share good practice and promote our work.

The main role of the intern will be to support the work of the VODW Programme and Comhlámh in the implementation of the strategic and operational plans, with regular reporting to the Programme Manager. Interns are a major resource and make a vital contribution to help us achieve our aims.
