Volunteer in Kenya in ’09
When Kenya hit the headlines in early 2008, it was all about death, destruction and displacement. Now almost nine months after the controversial Presidential election, the country is picking itself up and making efforts to resume the peaceful life it had before. The crops are beginning to grow again in the fields, schools and hospitals have reopened and people are returning to their homes. Friends of Londiani had been working in Kenya since 2002 and throughout the emergency situation they supported the people of Londiani.
Now FOL is looking to the future and is launching its 2009 summer projects for volunteers.
Friends of Londiani is seeking 80 volunteers to work for 3 week periods in Kenya next July and August.
FOL calls on people over 18 years from all walks of life to consider becoming a volunteer. FOL has run three successful summer projects to date and its volunteers are the key to its successful work. One of last years volunteers described the experience as “the best thing I ever did”. FOL volunteers work side by side with Kenyans on joint projects such as building classrooms, running health related courses, teaching children healthy practices, assisting in medical clinics and installing rainwater collection tanks in places where the only drinking water is the local river which is shared by animals and humans alike. There are only two requirements to becoming a volunteer and they are - One: to be willing to learn and Two: to be a team-player. FOL believes that together with their volunteers they can improve the lives of the local communities.
"If our hopes of building a better and safer world are to become more than wishful thinking, we will need the engagement of volunteers more than ever." Kofi Annan
FOL will be holding Information Evenings in Cork and Dublin to launch the summer project. FOL sends an open invitation to anyone interested to attend. Project Leaders will be available to answer any questions during these informal events.
