This 1 day workshop run by Comhlámh is open to anyone considering volunteering overseas for global development (both short-term and long-term) who wants to consider their options in a participatory manner. Some of the issues which we will examine include: What is development?, the role of the volunteer/development worker, motivations and expectations, types of agencies and projects, and volunteering for global development from Ireland. A one-day workshop for people interested in volunteering overseas in a developing country.
This workshop provides a chance for those thinking of working for global development to meet with others and consider the options available. The sessions on the weekend will explore development and underdevelopment, the role of the development worker in the context of development aid, types of development and aid agencies, motivations for going overseas, and solidarity work from Ireland.
The course will be facilitated by a group of returned development workers. Additionally, there will be an opportunity to meet with returned volunteers and development workers. The workshop is participatory and is designed to explore the issues in a way that will encourage action on development issues from a justice and equality perspective.

Hosted by Concern Worldwide, this open day will focus on the UN’s theme for World Humanitarian Day ‘I am an aid worker’. Come along and meet some of Concern’s local Haitian aid workers who were there when the massive earthquake struck. Meet members of Concern’s Emergency Response Team who dealt with the aftermath of the quake. Hear about the effectiveness of Concern’s humanitarian work in the country since 1994 and since the January 2010 catastrophe itself, and see insightful audio visual and photographic evidence. Get advice first-hand from aid workers about their experiences across a range of countries.
