Streetwise is a group of Irish volunteers from all walks of life who have come together to help with the construction of several specific projects in the townships of South Africa.

The Current Project:

The current Streetwise project involves building a new Don Bosco Educare Centre in the Delft Township, South Africa. The Centre’s objective is to empower poor families through the Educare Centre and after-school child care. The project is being developed by the Salesian Sisters at their mission station at Delft, a township situated 30kms from Cape Town.
The Educare Centre will provide much needed food, healthcare and education to young children aged from 3-8. There is a local committee in place that represents all beneficiaries and is consulted throughout the project.

Project Officer to work on Volunteering Options and Development Worker Programme:

The successful applicant will report to the Programme Manager of the Volunteering Options and Development Workers (VODW) Programme. The main role of the Project Officer will be to support organisations in implementing Comhlámh’s Code of Good Practice for Volunteer Sending Organisations. The post will also involve working as part of a team and feeding into the work of the VODW Programme and Comhlámh in the implementation of our strategic and operational plans. A-Z Children's Charity is looking for Nurses and General Skills Volunteers to travel to Uganda with them in October to work on a two week placement to help them to achieve their mission to provide healthcare and education for orphans and children who are vulnerable as a consequence of HIV/AIDS in Uganda.

FRIENDS OF LONDIANI are looking for teams of volunteers for our projects in 2011

Friends of Londiani are an Irish charity working with communities in the towns and villages around Londiani in Kenya since 2002. The work is based on the needs of the local people and the projects are focused on healthcare, education and clean water.

Harambee Projects:

Harambee is a Swahili word for “working together” and FOL volunteer projects are all about volunteers working together with members of the local community on various development projects.  FOL has organised many volunteer projects since 2002 and now organise two projects each year – one in Summer and one in Autumn. Building on these successful experiences, FOL are organising Harambee 2011.
