On 22 November 2009, Addis Ababa will host Africa’s biggest road race, a challenging 10km at 10,000 feet above sea level. Beginning in downtown Addis Ababa, you’ll be joined by 30,000 other competitors, including the great Haile Gebrselassie. There are a huge variety of runners of all age groups and fitness levels taking part.

The Matitanana River Integrated Water Management Project (MIWM) aims to develop a self-financing and sustainable solution to the problems of supply of water for drinking, sanitation and irrigation for the population living along the south bank of the Matitanana river in south east Madagascar.

The project manager will work in close collaboration with the local land owners association, local government authorities, the Catholic Parish of Vohipeno and grassroots level village organizations and institutions.

Degree in engineering.
Additional educational qualifications in water & sanitation management, desirable but not essential.
Able to work with a wide range of stakeholders, including local institutions, churches and grassroot organizations.

Formed in 2002, the Vincentian Lay Missionaries (VLM) aims to support the building of a future for those most in need in the poorest areas of Ethiopia. It also aims to highlight the global issue of poverty, to advocate and to support action for change.

We work in partnership with the Daughters of Charity, Ethiopia, our hosts and mentors, in order to provide financial support and technical expertise to projects throughout the Country.

Information evening:  Volunteering in Developing Countries

As part of its Volunteering Options Programme, Comhlámh is holding an information evening for people who are thinking about volunteering overseas in developing countries.  This short, informal event offers the opportunity to hear more about the issues you need to consider before making a decision about volunteering.  It also provides an opportunity to hear first-hand about the experiences of a person who volunteered abroad and to ask any questions you might have about your options.

Wed 18 March at 6.00pm in VSB, 34 Shaftsbury Square, Belfast.

Come along and find out about the wide range of volunteering opportunities (over 500 projects) in 70 countries worldwide. Jesuit Volunteers International (Ireland) (JVI)

JVI has two positions for Volunteers to teach at a St. Ignatius Primary School, in Dodoma, Tanzania, for a school year, starting on July 1st, 2009. This private nonprofit school was established in 2003 by the Jesuits of Dodoma, and has enrollment of 285. It proudly provides for both educational and spiritual growth. Volunteers will be asked to teach English and Mathematics. Any expertise in Music would be especially welcome, as well as an ability to teach Science, Social Skills, and to organize Sports programmes. More information is available at http://www.jvi.ie

Info Events for VSI Volunteering Programmes 2009

VSI will run 2 Info Workshops in Dublin on Wednesday, 25 February at 6.30pm and Sat. 28 February at 2.00pm in the Central Hotel, Exchequer St., Dublin 1. There will be presentations on all of VSI's programmes and the 500 plus projects taking place in 2009 in over 70 countries worldwide. Copies of our Project Book will be available.
