The Little Sisters of the Assumption are recruiting two trained primary school teachers who have a good community-oriented focus and who can drive a car or ride a motor bike.  Alternatively you may have community work experience along with some teaching experience. The placement will be for a minimum of two years and the first three months will be spent in a language school learning Portuguese. Ideally you will depart for Brazil at the end of 2012 and be ready to begin work in Umburanas in March 2013.

Their main work will be twofold:  helping in the Childrens’ Centres with the After-School activities and supporting the local leaders in the two NGOs.  One is the Association of the Missionary Community which runs two Childrens’ Centres, one in the town and one in a rural village.  The other is the Citizens’ Forum of Umburanas which focuses on conscientization and education in social justice, in partnership with Trocaire.

We give a high priority to preschools and after-school activities because many of the children are referred from the local school because they did not pass their year.  If they do not get the homework help, they will lose all interest in school and eventually drop out.  The After-School activities also offer a variety of creative activities for their development such as arts and crafts, cookery and computers. As well as the above work, the two volunteer teachers will support the local leaders of the Association and the Citizens’ Forum.  This will be an important aspect, because there are no local professional people engaged in community work.

The volunteers will live in a house in the town of Umburanas, with running water and electricity.
